Decompression Theory and Physiology
Decompression theory and physiology videos
Technical divers should develop at least a basic knowledge of decompression theory and physiology. While these topics are complex, research over recent decades has expanded our understanding far beyond what was known in the 1960s. This new knowledge has reshaped many accepted practices. Examples include the debate on deep stops, the role of exercise before diving, and the potential benefits of pre-breathing oxygen.
Contributions from Diving Medicine Specialists
The technical diving community has gained greatly from the work of several medical specialists who also dive. Professor Simon Mitchell, Dr David Doolette, and Dr Neal Pollock are among the most influential. Each has dedicated significant effort to explaining decompression research and diving physiology. Their presentations are long but clearly structured, making complex ideas accessible to divers at every level.
Recommended Presentations on Diving Physiology
There are many high-quality videos available for divers who want to improve their understanding. Dr Neal Pollock’s BSAC conference talk on decompression stress is especially valuable. It challenges long-standing assumptions about the rules of diving and provides an eye-opening overview for most divers.
Dr Peter Wilmshurst’s presentation on immersion pulmonary edema (oedema in the UK) is also recommended. This condition is poorly understood but appears more common than previously believed. Cold-water divers are particularly at risk. Recognising early symptoms is vital, since they can easily be mistaken for other problems.
